We are currently seeking applications for Communications Team Leaders within the Communications department based in Edinburgh. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. Candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria below will be invited to the assessments.

This post attracts a £3,000 communications pay supplement - rising to £5,000 after 12 months’ satisfactory service. Pay supplements are temporary payments designed to address recruitment and retention issues caused by market pressures and are subject to regular review.  The supplement is paid in addition to salary.


Joining us as a Scottish Government communications team leader, you will come from a PR or journalism background and have an interest in politics and current affairs. You will have experience of leading and managing a team and have the ability to balance workloads to ensure priority work is delivered effectively and on time. You will have the ability to think creatively and communicate using a wide range of traditional and emerging media channels to target the right audiences. You will have a developed news sense, be organised and able to work in an often pressurised environment. You will also have experience of working strategically and at a senior executive level.

Qualifications and Experience Required
For jobs in Band C, you must hold a minimum of three Highers or equivalent, and have a minimum of  six years’ experience in a PR or journalism background.

Main Duties:
Leading a team – including representing your communications team at ministerial portfolio meetings and other senior level meetings, providing communications advice as required.
Strategic planning – working with Ministers, senior policy colleagues and special advisers to maintain an overview of Programme for Government priorities, identifying risks and opportunities and providing strategic advice and overseeing cross-portfolio communications planning.
Media and press management – building relationships and working with journalists and other key influencers to inform the public of Scottish Government policies.
News management – spotting potential problems and reacting quickly ensuring ministers and officials receive timely and professional advice.
Content creation – helping create, shape, share and exchange dynamic content through social media channels.
Campaigns – playing an active role in Scottish Government campaigns and working alongside marketing and insight colleagues.
Out-of-hours cover – participating in our team leader duty rota system, providing senior support and advice to duty officers at weekends and public holidays
