We are currently seeking applications for an Official Veterinarian within the Food Standard Scotland based in Aberdeen. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. Candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria below will be invited to the assessments.
The Official Veterinarian (OV) role is one of the key front-line operational roles within the FSS. These staff deliver Official Controls (OC) in approved premises across the Scotland, ensuring that meat produced is safe for human consumption.
The core work for the Official Veterinarian remains the delivery of Official Controls for safe meat production in Red and White meat slaughterhouses and Game handling establishments (GHE’s) within Scotland.
The FSS Official Veterinarian (OV) provides a technical and leadership role, in approved premises providing technical advice and direction to the plant inspection team to ensure the efficient and consistent delivery of Official Controls and associated tasks, as defined within the SMOC.

Qualifications Required
For jobs in Band B & C you must hold a minimum of 3 Highers or equivalent.
Other qualifications equivalent to these may also be acceptable, if you are in any doubt please contact to discuss.
Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS).
OV Surgeon (Red/White) or OV Appointment.

1. Strong organisational skills, adaptable and able to deliver to agreed timescales and deadlines.
2. Excellent verbal (English) and written communication skills.
3. Ability to work well and lead a team as well as independently with minimum supervision to achieve objectives.
4. Able to build professional relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Additional Information
Due to the remote locations of sites a considerable amount of driving is involved therefore a full valid driving licence that enables the candidate to drive in the UK is required. However the Scottish Government will consider proposals put forward by applicants to carry out the duties by any other means.

Must be able to pass a colour blindness test.
