Overview
The Assistant Fishery Officer is the first point of contact for the public, other government departments and stakeholders. As such, they must have knowledge of Marine Scotland's Aims and Objectives and have the knowledge and ability to be able to put the caller in touch with the correct person. This vacancy offers an opportunity to join a small team and provide admin support to the fishery officer with the prospect of being able to advance to the role of fishery officer through dedicated on the job training. As such the Assistant Fishery Officer will be required to assist the Senior Fishery Officer with inspection duties both on the pier and on board fishing vessels and accompany Warranted Officers in other inspection tasks including visits to premises and landing creeks.

Marine Scotland Compliance is responsible for deterring and detecting illegal activities through effective compliance and enforcement arrangements. We employ Marine staff that are responsible for crewing the 3 Marine Scotland Compliance Marine Protection vessels, and Coastal Inspection staff who make up the Sea Fisheries Inspectorate. The coastal staff are located at 18 Fishery Offices around the Scottish coast, and at the Registration of Buyers and Sellers Unit which is based in Aberdeen. The Compliance Headquarters is based in Victoria Quay, Edinburgh where the Enforcement Unit is located.

Main Duties
• Dealing with internal and external enquiries.
• Updating and maintaining paper and electronic files.
• Data input and analysis.
• Collating materials.
• Organising and issuing letters and papers to Industry.
• Assisting in inspection duties.
• Input Inspection data onto MCSS.

Qualification
Throughout the first 12 months the candidate will be expected to gain a relevant SVQ qualification in Business Administration. Support will be provided by a qualified assessor who will work with the successful candidate on a monthly basis. Time will be given to work on your qualification, this includes delivering 2 presentations. Thereafter the post holder can, during the next 12 months, work, in a structured training environment towards gaining Warranted British Sea Fisheries Officer status after being successful at a competency based interview board.

Essential Criteria

1. Strong communications skills, both written and oral and have the ability to build good working relationships.
2. Be able to work as part of a small team and also have the ability to work on own initiative, seeking support and guidance when needed.
3. Good organisational skills and is able to prioritise workload.
4. An effective working knowledge of IT systems including Microsoft office packages.
