We are currently seeking applications for a Parliamentary Counsel within the Parliamentary Counsel Office (PCO) based in Edinburgh. This is a 18 month fixed term and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. Candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria below will be invited to the assessments.

Parliamentary counsel are lawyers who draft legislation, principally on behalf of the Scottish Government, and work to secure its parliamentary passage. This 18 month fixed-term post as parliamentary counsel will be based in Edinburgh.

Qualifications Required
You must be a solicitor or advocate admitted, or to be admitted, in Scotland or be legally qualified in Scotland or elsewhere and able to demonstrate a level of understanding of law and legal concepts relevant to the role at least equivalent to that of a solicitor or advocate.

Essential Criteria
1. An aptitude for, and preferably previous experience of, drafting primary legislation and a knowledge of the legislative concepts, processes and procedures used in the preparation of primary legislation.
2. Excellent analytical skills and an ability to communicate complex information clearly.
3. An ability to think creatively and an enthusiasm for continuous improvement.
4. A commitment to quality and personal resilience to maintain performance under sustained pressure.
