We are currently seeking applications for Business Manager within the Digital Directorate based in Edinburgh. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. The role will formally sit in the Product and Commercial division, however this is a role that will in fact work across two divisions; Product and Commercial and the Office of the Chief Designer, both within the Scottish Government's Digital Directorate.

The aim of the Product and Commercial division is to help central government and related organisations deliver products and adopt digital business models that will produce well designed, accessible and inclusive public services. This is supported by modern, flexible and digitally-focused commercial and procurement processes. The division has grown significantly over the last year, therefore there is a great opportunity to contribute to future strategy and delivery, and shape and establish processes.

The Office of the Chief Designer was established to support, promote and enable design in government and the wider public sector by: developing common design methods, tools and standards; leading the DDAT User Centred Design profession family within the SG, and promote and support accessible and inclusive design of government digital services. We work externally on these areas too through a pan Scotland initiative called 'The Scottish Approach to Service Design'. We also seek to reduced digital exclusion in Scotland through a range of projects, and finally we develop policy on digital ethics and are delivering a national Commission on Digital Ethics comprising an expert working group complemented by a wide range of public engagement events to listen to citizen's views.

Both divisions lead on priority areas of work and Programme for Government commitments, including the Connecting Scotland Programme set up in response to Covid-19, as well as both the CivTech accelerator and common platform development. The Business Manager will be key to the successful delivery of these and will be particularly focussed on strengthening business management across these areas.

As the Business Manager working across both divisions your role will be to work directly to the Head of the Product and Commercial and the Scottish Government's Chief Design Officer. You will need to be capable and confident of working autonomously with limited supervision, managing your own priorities and forging strong relationships across the divisions, wider Digital Directorate, and other parts of the organisation.

The post holder will support teams lead to provide strategic oversight and direction for business strategy activities with extensive collaboration with divisional Senior Management Teams, branches within each division, colleagues in Digital Directorate and customer across the core Scottish Government directorates.

Qualifications Required
For jobs in Band B & C you must hold a minimum of 3 Highers or equivalent.

Essential Criteria
1. Excellent planning and organisational skills, including the ability to make connections and add value in a busy environment with competing demands and the ability to work both as part of a team, or on your own initiative.
2. Ability to engage confidently and collaboratively with people, communicating clearly and establishing positive working relationships.
3. Capable and confident in making sound decisions at pace on actions to be taken and communicating these to others.
4. Experience of programme and project management including financial management processes and accurate profiling and reporting on budgets.
