We are currently seeking applications for an Professional Support Legal Assistant within the Legal Services based in Edinburgh. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. Candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria below will be invited to the assessments.

The Scottish Government Legal Directorate are responsible for providing a full range of legal services to the Scottish Government and a number of public bodies, including instructing primary legislation, drafting secondary legislation and advising Ministers and their officials across a broad range of legal issues ranging from ECHR and the Scotland Act 1998 to contract and data protection law.

Vacancies have arisen for Professional Support Legal Assistants across a number of divisions within the Scottish Government Legal Directorate. It is a busy operational environment, dealing with high profile, complex and often sensitive legal issues. In order to facilitate those demands you will need to work flexibly to meet business needs.

Qualifications Required
You should be competent in legal research and analysis.

You are required to have a first or upper second class Honours degree in law (LLB (Hons)) OR a first or second class Honours degree with a relevant post graduate qualification (e.g. LLB (graduate entry) or LLM in law).

Alternatively, you may be eligible to apply if you can provide evidence of excellent legal research skills and substantial work experience in legal research.

Essential Criteria
1. Ability to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of public law and its practical application to government in Scotland.
2. Ability to prioritise between and meet competing demands with tight deadlines.
3. Ability to identify and interpret relevant information and to reach sound conclusions on the basis of that information.
4. Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) on complex issues.

Nationality requirements
This job is broadly open to the following groups:
• UK nationals
• nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UKs
• nationals of the Republic of Ireland
• nationals from the EU, EEA or Switzerland with (or eligible for) status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS)
• relevant EU, EEA, Swiss or Turkish nationals working in the Civil Service
• relevant EU, EEA, Swiss or Turkish nationals who have built up the right to work in the Civil Service
• certain family members of the relevant EU, EEA, Swiss or Turkish nationals.
