We are currently seeking applications for Archives Assistant within National Records of Scotland (NRS) based in Edinburgh. This is a 6 month fixed-term (without fair and open competition) and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. As Fixed-Term Appointments (without fair and open competition) are already exceptions to Civil Service Commission's Recruitment Principles they cannot under any circumstances be extended over 23 months and must not have held a previous fixed term appointment (without fair and open competition) or secondment in the 12 months prior to the appointment start date. An exciting opportunity for an early career archivist/ records manager to work as assistant archivist has arisen within Records and Archives Engagement Branch in the National Records of Scotland. Records and Archives Engagement Branch liaises with record keeping bodies across Scotland, in both the public and private sector, to support and develop records and archive services nationally. 

Qualifications Required
For jobs in Band B & C you must hold a minimum of 3 Highers or equivalent.

Main Duties 
The position will cover activities in two distinct business areas within the larger team. 

As part of Public Records Scotland Team, the post holder's duties will include:
• Assisting in the monitoring, measuring and reporting on improvement models submitted as part of agreed plans under the Progress Update Review  (PUR) system;
• Liaison and guidance to existing bodies undertaking PUR scheme, providing assessment and action plans within agreed timescales;

In addition, as part of the Archive Strategy and Liaison Team, the post holder will assist in delivering a variety of duties including:
• Contributing to the continuous development and improvement of NRAS own archive policies and practices in relation to archive service accreditation.
• Assist the team lead in engagement activities with the wider Scottish archive and record keeping sector.

Essential Criteria
The successful candidate should have experience of working with records and archives and hold, or be working towards, an ARA approved qualification in archives and records management.
They will be a motivated, enthusiastic professional who is able to work on their own initiative.
An understanding of public records legislation and the Scottish archives sector is highly desirable
