We are currently seeking applications for an Assistant Laboratory Diagnostician within SASA based in Rodding Road, Edinburgh. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range. SASA's primary role is to provide scientific services and advice to Scottish Ministers in support of Scotland's agriculture and wider environment. Although much of the work is in support of arable agriculture, services are also provided in food safety and wildlife management and crime.

The Plant Health Sciences branch of SASA carries out pathogen diagnosis to implement the requirements of The Plant Health (Official Controls and Miscellaneous Provisions) (Scotland) Regulations 2019. It is also responsible of running the United Kingdom Potato Quarantine Unit (UK PQU) on behalf of the UK Plant Health Service. SASA aims to provide an efficient, cost effective and up to date service to customers through its skilled staff, modern equipment and facilities.

A vacancy has arisen within the branch for an Assistant Laboratory Diagnostician. The post will be shared between the Horticultural Pathology Unit (1 x B3, 1 x B2 and 1 x A4 (50% this post)) and the UK PQU (1 x B3, 1 x B1, 2 x A3 and 1 x A4 (50% this post)).The primary role of the post is to assist with testing of horticultural plants for regulated diseases and to assist in the potato quarantine testing programme.

Your work will involve pathogen testing using conventional methods, bioassays, molecular (PCR, RT-PCR and real-time PCR) and serological (ELISA) methods and plant propagation (conventional and micropropagation). All work follows strict ISO:17025 or ISO:9001 quality assurance procedures.

Qualifications Required
For jobs in Band A, you must hold a minimum of 5 Standard Grades (grades 1–3) or Ordinary Grades (A-C) including English and a numerical subject.

Essential Criteria
1. Laboratory experience with serological and/or molecular methods and aseptic techniques in an ISO:17025 accredited environment.
2. Proven track record of working effectively as part of a team with good communication skills.
3. Attention to detail, and the ability to organise and prioritise your workload.
4. Good record keeping skills, both on paper and IT based.
